School Profile
Auburn
South Primary School is located in Hawthorn East on Tooronga Road.
Situated amongst older style homes the school has a stable student
population of 565. The school’s outstanding reputation combined with
accommodation constraints has meant that enrolments are zoned to the
local neighbourhood area. In 1999 eight new classrooms, a
music room and a multipurpose/canteen building were completed.
Four classrooms with a central hall area, a red brick two storey
building, an art room, library and a science/technology centre make for
a well-resourced facility. In addition to this, the school operates a
Before School and After School Care program, which is located within
the school grounds.
Students in Victoria must have a curriculum prescribed by the
Government of Victoria, called the Victorian Essential Learning
Standards — VELS. All key learning areas are provided in English,
Mathematics, Studies of Society and Environment, Health and Physical
Education, Science and Technology, LOTE (Mandarin) and the Arts. Our
school also integrates Information Technology with networked computers
in all classrooms and a mini-lab located in the main building. In 1999
the school established a Science/Technology. The centre has a focus to
“hands on” science within a multimedia context. The school also offers
a camping program for Years 3 to 6 and a comprehensive
interschool sport and swimming program.
The
school is an accredited International Baccalaureate World School and
has delivered the Primary Years Program since 2003. The program has a
number of primary features including a teaching model which is based on
inquiry learning. We are also required to provide an international or
global perspective in all areas of our curriculum in recognition of the
fact that we are one part of a wide world. There is also a student and
learner profile which articulates the values and behaviours we expect
our students to display through out the course of their primary
education.
Since the period of introduction we have noticed a change in student
behaviour with improvements in the student’s ability to ask questions
and research answers and to be generally more motivated and
enthusiastic in their approach to learning. There are many other
features of this program which can be read by referring to the
Curriculum section of our web page and by visiting the IB website at
http://www.ibo.org
The school has a significant number of high achieving students. The
school offers a variety
of extension programs for these students.
At
Auburn South Primary School there is an outstanding and well-recognised
commitment by the school community. The biennial fair raised $100,000
in 2006, which highlights the strength, interest and enthusiasm of the
school community. The Mentor Program for new parents, the school
directory and the classroom parent scheme keep a large community in
contact with each other making the school feel much smaller and closer
knit than its size would indicate.
In recent years the school has been reviewed, extended and improved its
curriculum programs as it supports the ethos of developing a learning
community. Continuous improvement and excellence are sought at every
level. A sense of enthusiasm, energy and excitement exists in the
school and is evident in the attitude of our students, staff and parent
community.
